Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The Venetian castle in the entrance of the old harbor, known with its turkish name, "Kule"


Here you see one of the bastions of the Venetian Castle at the entrance of the old Venetian port of castle is known with its turkish name "Kule". It was constructed between 1523 and 1540 (during the Venetian occupation of Crete( when it took the form that you'll see if you visit it). There was an older castle in the same position that collapsed by an earthquake in 1303. The castle was on of the shooting locations for the biography film "El Greco", directed by Yiannis Smaragdis. El Greco (real name "Dominikos Theotokopoulos") was born in Fodele, a small village, about 35 km west of Heraklion.
