American Florist : Please advise how alcohol can be usecl to advantage in hastening the germina- tion of asparagus and other similar seeds. Kentucky. E. P. H. While we know of no experiments that have been made which bear di- rectly on the seeds mentioned, E. Ver- sohaffelt, in a paper entitled "The Chem- ical Treatment of Seeds WTiich Take Up Water Slowly," pubhshed in 1912, says in regard to canna seeds, that they do not take up water readily, and neither do they take up alcohol. How- ever, it has been found that a number of seeds, including some of the legumes which do not take up water readily, if immersed in dilute alcohol for a short time and then put in water, soften with- out injuring their germination. Careful experiments should be conducted, how- ever, to determine the exact conditions under which ihis practice should be applied to make it of real value. E. B. British Export Embargoes Removed.
