False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the head and thorax of a velvety tree ant, Liometopum occidental, showing the two segemented antennae (top, left & right), the left compound eye, the mandibles (mouthparts) and the three pairs of legs. The velvety tree ant is common in California and the western states of the US. It lives in cracks in tree bark and feeds on insects and honeydew.
