William Herbert Steavenson (1894-1975), British amateur astronomer and surgeon. Steavenson began using a telescope at the age of 13, discovering a comet in 1911, and then being elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) in 1912 aged 17. Blinded in childhood in his right eye, he was an expert on telescope optics, the author of several books on astronomy, Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College from 1946 to 1964, and for 30 years astronomy correspondent for The Times. He was awarded the Jackson-Gwilt Medal of the RAS in 1928. This is the portrait taken for his tenure as RAS President from 1957 to 1959.
