Motorboat moored at the marina on the Kowie River, Port Alfred, South Africa

Port Alfred, between Port Elizabeth and East London, is a thriving seaside village and upmarket water sports paradise at the mouth of the Kowie River. Founded by a group of English settlers in 1820, it was originally called Port Kowie, then Port Frances, then Port Alfred, to commemorate the visit in 1860 of Queen Victoria's son, Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It has a population around 20,800 and, like nearby Kenton-on-Sea, it has retained its English village feel. Kowie, itself, is derived from the Xhosa Qoyi 'rushing'.
