It is said that he neglected by accident to pull off his cap when theKing entered, and apologised for his negligence in the most respectful manner ;but his Majesty entreated him to be covered, for he looked on his presence atthe solemnity as a very particular honour. But it is doubtful if any of the titled owners of this rambling old mansionwere ever as widely known as the celebrated John Hill Burton, , theScottish historian, who resided here for many years in the latter half of thiscentury, this distinguished author being equally famed in the literary world oflaw, history, and politics. The intellectual gatherings that were held beneathhis hospitable roof were most recherches, and he gave to the venerable place apeculiar charm all his own which never failed to delight his guests. Judginghim by the depth of his scientific and political works, and his celebrated Historyof Scotland, few could imagine the wealth of anecdote, and the large-hearted,sympathetic kindliness that graced his conversation as host and entertainer,which is not
