The inner walls of the fruit are ,„. covered with tiny hairs. These grow and fill the cavities as the fruit ripens. They make the juicy part of the fruit. A young Apple shows five carpels surrounded by a green cup. This cup grows and ripens with the ovaries. A Rose Hip has a fruit built on a similar plan, only there are more carpels. The part outside the outer double line, in Fig. iSi, is the receptacle which bears the calyx at the top. It encloses and is united with the five carpels, the core. The mesocarp lies between the outer and inner double lines of the diagram.
