Care of the Mouth.—The proper care of the mouthcontributes as much as any one thing to the patientscomfort. It is, more than anything else, the mark of agood nurse. An unclean mouth may be the direct cause. If the patient is not too ill to use a tooth-brush, hecan clean his teeth better than you can do it for bed patient who is able to turn and who has a reason- 86 FIRST YEAR NURSING able degree of strength may, with the assistance of anurse, turn to the left side and, using a small kidney-shaped basin, do very well a1 brushing and patients need to be reminded of this part of theirtoilet, and not a few get their first lesson in month-cleanliness in the hospital. If a patient has no tooth-brush, the family should be instructed to bring onepromptly or the hospital should provide it. Twice aday is not too often for a patient to brush his teeth anduse a mouth-wash. One who is too ill or too weak must have
