The pilot of an Avro Lancaster of No. 103 Squadron RAF based at Elsham Wolds, Lincolnshire, wearing his oxygen mask while flying the aircraft at high altitude. The "Lancs" first saw service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 and as the strategic bombing offensive over Europe gathered momentum, it became the main aircraft for the night-time bombing campaigns that followed.
