In the declarationthe various objectionableacts of the British govern-ment were specified, andit declared that, if forcewere used to compel thepeople of Massachusetts toobey, all America ought to support them in their opposition. Whigs and Tories ; Resistance. (1775.) — Before thistime two distinct parties had arisen in the country, the onecalled Tory, upholding the power of the British government,or at least disapproving of resistance to its regulations; theother called Whig, approving of resistance by force, if need-ful. The names were used in America from 1764, and weretaken from British politics, the. word Tory representing thepresent Conservatives, and Whig, the Liberals, in England. During the time the congress was in session, the people ofthe colonies Avere collecting arms for use in case of necessity,and this was done most of all in Massachusetts. Her chartergovernment had been overthrown by the governor, and shewas really governed by what was called the Provincial Con-gress. By the order of this body, arms and ammunition hadbeen collected at various points, and 20,000 minute-men enrolled, to be ready at a
