. Journal of radiology . Figure XII.—Three weeks later, spontaneous rupture into bronchuswith disappearance of shadow. 95 X-RAY STUDIES OF MtiDIASTXAL SHADOWS IN DERMOID CYST—KAHN but a portion of the cyst wall was re-moved for examination. Examinationoi the small compressed lung showedwhat was apparently red block of this was removed for ex-amination. There was now a cavity inthe position formerly occupied by theright lung as large as a childs head. Cross Pathology—The tumor masswhich was irregular in outline, was softand spongy in consistency, had a pink-ish white appearance and looked verymuch like skin. It was covered withshort fine hair. On section, the skinsurface had a thin layer of connectivetissue beneath, very similar to normalskin. Deeper down there was consider-able fat and a connective tissue of the cyst wall showed a verydense hard fibrous tissue almost likecartilage. Piece of lung showed Figure XIII.—Dermoid cyst occupy-ing- greater part of the right side ofthe chest. This tumor is somewhatspherical and there is no expansilepulsation roentgenoscopically. Thepossibility of echinococcus cyst wasconsidered because of its site. Cystmarkedly adherent to the medias-tinum and sternum so that it couldnot be completely removed. Microscopic Study—Section of thecyst wall was very similar to that de-scribed immediately after the was composed of very dense fibroustissue and there was no evidence or anepithelial lining. No hair follicles, nosebaceous glands, no sweat glands. Section of the tumor showed an epi-thelial covering very much like were hair follicles, sebaceousglands, and sweat glands. Beneath theepithelium there was subcutaneous con-nective tissue and fat. Section of the lung showed a chronicfibrosis with later chronic inflammatorytissue and fresh pneumonia in the stageof red hepatization.
