Among hisimpressions of the place he says that, Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix, S. J.,was commissioned by the French Government,in 1720, to make a tour of observation throughthe French possessions in America. This triphe describes in his Histoire et description gen-erale de la Nouvelle France, avec le journal his-torique d un voyage fait par ordre du roi dansIAmerique Septentrionale, Paris, 1744. 114 HISTORY OP THE DIOCESE OF the fort is preserved, also the house ofthe missionaries, who are not much em-ployed at present. If he had meantNew Mackinac he would not speak ofit as being preserved because it was oc-cupied— (if already built at that time). He likewise clearly conveys the impres-sion that the Jesuits were there, althoughnot much employed. It is hard to saywhether or not they built up another. ST. Pauls church and rectory, negaunee. chapel, but if they did it was only a tem-porary affair—a bark chapel at its it is accepted that the newfort was established under De Louvigny,in 1/12, but not at the old site on thenorthern point, but on the of theLower Peninsula, known today as Mack- inaw City. We have our positive doubtsas to that. The post might have been re-established in 1712 but we doubt whetherit was built at once on the northern pointof the Lower Peninsula. The church wasnot, that is sure, and we have the follow-ing reasons which militate against an ad-verse assumption. A note made by Du Jaunay in 1743,on page seven of the baptismal recordfirst arrests our attention. One, MarieConstance, legitimate daughter of Josep
