Inaddition, electrolysis causes hydrogen andoxygen to appear, and these gases form aninsulatmg mantle romid the anode which in-terrupts the current. If there is a sujQ&cientamomit of self-induction in the circuit, aspark appears at the breaking point, namelythe anode, ignites the gases, and the explo-sion gives the acid access to the platmum, thus closing the current again. This processtakes place with extraordinary rapidity andregularity. The intensity of the discharges and thefrequency of the interruptions can be variedin the widest hmits by varying the electro-primary circuit, the surface of the platmum. Unless a considerable latitude is allowed for,the X-ray tube is more hkely to be damaged, the anti-cathode being quicklypierced if too powerful currents are used for long periods. When, however, the electrolytic mterrupter is provided with three or more pomts and a suit-able switch on the general or main switchboard, all degrees of exposure canbe successfully used. Even for therapeutic work this interrupter whenproperly used is midoubtedly one of the best forms of interrupter. With a time-relay switch most powerful currents may be used if onlyfor a fraction of a second. Carelessness in leaving the thicker
