WASHINGTON DC, United States — The sun rises behind the Washington Monument, as seen from the spot where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. A plaque commemorating the spot is etched into the marble steps.
Photograph by David Coleman. The Washington Monument, a 555-foot ( m) obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, , stands as a testament to the first President, George Washington. Completed in 1884, it was the world's tallest structure until 1889. The monument is made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, with its distinctive two-tone coloration resulting from a pause in construction during the Civil War. At its base, the obelisk measures 55 feet ( m) wide. Across the National Mall, about miles ( km) west, stands the Lincoln Memorial. This neoclassical monument was built to honor the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Dedicated in 1922, the memorial features a large seated sculpture of Lincoln and inscriptions of two of his most famous speeches: the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. The steps of the Lincoln Memorial gained additional historical significance on August 28, 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his pivotal "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This event, attended by over 250,000 people, was a defining moment in the American Civil Rights Movement. Today, both the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial are integral parts of the National Mall, often referred to as "America's Front Yard." The Mall stretches from the Capitol in the east to the Lincoln Memorial in the west, encompassing numerous monuments, memorials, and museums along its length. These landmarks attract millions of visitors annually, serving as symbols of American democracy and history.
