Great mullein hairs. Polarised light micrograph of hair-like structures, known as candelabra trichomes, from a great mullein (Verbascum thapsus) plant. The leaves and stems of the mullein have a dense carpet of candelabra trichomes. The trichomes stop insects and molluscs from being eaten. The trichomes can also slow down transpiration by trapping a layer of water vapour from the stomata. Magnification: x7 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
