This is the site of the fortress of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John during the 12th and 13th century The city was the last crusader stronghold in the Holy Land and was conquered by the Moslems in 1291 The Citadel and Palace of the Governor of Acre was built by the Ottomans on the Crussader ruins in the 17th and 18th centuries and a large prison was built here in the mid 19th century During the British Mandate the building served as government offices and incorporated the largest prison in Palestine After the estblishmant of the State of Israel part of the complex served as a mental hospital This was closed in 1985
