Salmonella bacterium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Salmonella typhimurium bacterium. This bacterium, also known as Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium, is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped cell. Salmonella is a major cause of food poisoning (salmonellosis) in humans, most commonly caught from infected pork, poultry and eggs. Symptoms include fever, chills, severe diarrhoea and vomiting. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x26,600 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
