J. Force and Rev. JohnM. Dickey each spent a few months in this Hunt, Gartner and Shepherd occasionallypreached here after the organization of the New-ton Presbytery. In 1832 Rev. Jacob T. Field was appointedstated supply for the congregations of Smithfieldand Stroudsburg, and in 1838 was installed aspastor. In consequence of his ill health theRev. B. J. Lane supplied the pulpit of the twochurches for six months, and in 1840 Mr. Fieldwas entirely laid aside by a paralytic THE OLD STONE CHURCH. Rev. John McNair then acted as supply for sixmonths. In 1841 Rev. Baker Johnson begauhis pastoral labors at Smithfield and MiddleSmithfield, and in 1849 the church at Strouds-burg was included in his pastoral charge. relinquished his care of the SmithfieldChurch in 1852, after serving for a period oftwelve years and six months. In 1853 the oldstone church was taken down and the presentbrick edifice erected on the same site. After theerection of the new church it was reorganized asa distinctly Presbyterian Church ; Rev. T. , Rev. John A. Riley and Elder Jere-miah Mackey were the committee apjxnnted bythe Presbytery of Newton for that Baker Johnson was also present. August11, 1853, the corner-stone of the new church waslaid. John D. La Bar, Findley Bush, SamuelDietrick and Robert R.
