Genetic research. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) chromatography being carried out on transgenic rice. Transgenic plants are ones that have been genetically modified by adding genes from different species. The chromatography analysis separates out the genetic material, allowing the success of the genetic modification to be assessed. For crop plants such as rice, the added genes usually promote resistance to pests and disease, or promote improved growth or other characteristics. Photographed at the French agricultural research institute, CIRAD, in Montpellier, France.
