With much fear andtrembling I accepted the arduous position. An incident oc-curred on the steamship from New Orleans to Galveston thatstill increased my fears, a very prominent Texan was on thesame boat and he approached me in amazement saying, Is itpossible that you are the young man that the Board has ap-pointed to fill the place of the great and good Wm. M. Tryon ?I answered, ]^o, sir, I nor no living man can fill BrotherTryons place, but I will stand where he stood and by thegrace of God preach the same glorious doctrine he preachedand leave the results mth God. EEY. JAS. JAMES HUCKINS. Kev. James Huckins was one of the Old Jesse Mercer, that far-seeing and eminent man ofGod, suggested him as the associate of Rev. Tryon, as the two pioneer missionaries to the ofTexas. They came as before stated, in 1840. Rev. Wm. settled at Washington, the center of political powerand the capital of the Republic. Brother Huckins located at 676 The Life and Writings of Galveston, the chief commercial center, with instructions topreach at Houston also then just, growing into Huckins was eminently fitted for his work. He wasborn in jSTew Hampshire, April, 1807. He was left a homelessorphan when four or five years old. He was converted and bap-tized at fourteen years of age. He was aided by the ITew Eng-land
