Even in Borge Bay which is perhaps as good as any in the group where none is perfect, the whalers were often subjected to considerable inconvenience. Pack-ice would occa- sionally drive in and block the entrance so that for many days the catchers could neither enter nor depart and work was completely at a standstill. At other times heavy swells would come in causing the factory to pitch so violently that flensing became impossible and whales waiting to be flensed were torn from their strong moorings and cast up on the beach, from which, however, it was generally possible to retrieve them.
