He is holding the message to the Senate announcing Louis Alexander Berthier's departure for Vienna, charged with requesting, on behalf of Napoleon, the hand in marriage of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma. Napoleon's first wife, Josephine, had not provided him with an heir, and he divorced her on 10 January 1810. He married Marie-Louise in March 1811. Engraving by Nicolas Colibert.
