This image of the underside of a European lobster's head (Homarus gammarus) shows its complicated series of feeding and sensory antennae, antennules, mandibles, maxillae and maxillipeds. Certain people are sometimes referred to as having 'blue blood'. In this species it is literally true, due to the fact that the blood contains hemocyanin. They can live for up to 50 years and, unlike humans, grow stronger and more fertile as they get older. Medical science should note that this could be linked to the effect of the enzyme telomerase, which is known to repair ageing DNA sequences. Irish Atlantic
