The history of Romanism : from the earliest corruptions of Christianity to the present time; with full chronological table, analytical and alphabetical indexes and glossary; illustrated by numerous accurate and highly finished engravings of its ceremonies, superstitions, persections, and historical incidents . ceremony, saysBower, that is observed to this Ash-Wednesday, so calledfrom the ceremony of giving the ashes, is the fortieth day be-fore Easter Sunday, and the Romish fast of Lent continuesduring the whole of this interval. The ashes used at this ceremonymust be made from the branches of the olive or palm that was blessed (to use the unmeaning language of Popery), on the PalmSunday of the preceding year. The priest blesses the ashes bymaking on them the sign of the cross, and perfuming them withincense. The ashes are first laid on the head of the officiatingpriest in the form of a cross, by another priest. After he has re-ceived the ashes himself, he then gives them to his assistants andthe other clergy present, after which the congregation, women aswell as men, one after another, approach the altar, kneel before thepriest, and receive this mark of the beast on their foreheads.(See Engraving.) * Deyling-ii Observation urn Sacrarum, pars i., exercit.
