The Grammar School of King Edward VI, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England can trace its origins to May 1295. It was established by the Guild of the Holy Cross. It is likely that the playwright and poet William Shakespeare attended the school between the ages of seven and fourteen. As a child, William would have been entitled to a free place at the school, and it was the only school for miles around. Although there is no conclusive evidence that he was schooled there it led to the school describing itself as "Shakespeare's School".
