Should it be necessary to acton a deeper structure and at the same time protect the skin from such action,a thick filter of platinum or lead is used. Two millimetres of platinum orfour of lead are sufficient to cut off all but the hardest of the beta rays, whilethe gamma ray is unaltered. The niters containing the radium are enclosedin a rubber tube to prevent the secondary radiation induced in the platinumby the radium rays from damaging the superficial structures. If the exposurebe long, further protection can be secured by using an inch or more of lint orgamgee tissue. In this way we can control the exposure so that we get ^ 5 .H* /f 4 -». • -<?x V
