A Psaltery. An ancient musical instrument.
The Jorvik Viking Centre runs a viking festival over a two week period each year. Over 14 million people have visited the Jorvik Viking Centre which is situated on the site of the York Archeological trusts excavation site of Viking York. The psaltery is an ancient instrument where the strings were plucked with fingers or by plectra. The name may have derived from the Greek psallein meaning plucked with fingers. Its origin was in the Middle East, and it is referred to in the Bible. It appeared in Europe in the 12th cent. and flourished until the late Middle Ages.
