Ambroise Pare treating wounded soldiers, 16th century. Illustration of French surgeon Ambroise Pare (1510-1590, centre) treating soldiers wounded from fighting on the battlefield. Pare is considered one of the pioneers of surgical techniques. He gained much experience as a military surgeon on the battlefields of Italy. He introduced the use of turpentine, instead of boiling oil, to cauterise wounds, and also introduced the technique of using ligatures on arteries. He published several books on anatomy and surgery. This engraving is based on a painting by Edouard Jean Conrad Hamman (1819-1888). The accompanying text for some engravings of this scene state: 'Je le pansay, Dieu le guarist', which roughly translates as 'I heal him, God saves him'.
