The renovation ofarchitecture went no further than decoration; the recessed buttresseswere replaced by pilasters, and the gables by pediments. Themouldings which overrun a Gothic fagade capriciously, like thebranches of an old vine-creeper, were disciplined and transformedinto delicate bas-reliefs; but the building was not disturbed in thelogic of its organism.
