A priest lights the Botafumeiro during the traditional pilgrims’ mass at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The famous silver thurible is swung by eight men in red robes known as tiraboleiros in a ritual that has taken place since the 11th century. The city is the terminus of the Way of St. James, the ancient Catholic pilgrimage to the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
