Bank of England, London, UK. City workers walking past the facade of the Bank of England. This bank was founded along with the Bank of Scotland in 1694 by William Paterson. Its purpose was to act as the English Government's banker. The first governor was Sir John Houblon (1694-1697) and the first chief cashier was John Kendrick (1694). The Bank has issued notes since 1694 but these were not fully printed until 1855. The Bank of England moved to its current location on Threadneedle Street in 1734.
