Stranded jellyfish Rhizostoma octopus on a beach in Cornwall, Uk. Rhizostoma octopus is a large jellyfish with an umbrella diameter of up to 80 cm. It is found swimming in the Atlantic and North Sea. It's nematocyst batteries, the stinging mechanism of jellyfish, are small and ineffectual. Large numbers of young fish swim under the protection of the large umbrella and the oral arms.
