Freshly caught cod (Gadus sp.) being held by a fisherman. The fish is covered in ice, in which it is stored to maintain its freshness during the journey to market. Cod is a popular food fish and is the source of cod liver oil, which is rich in vitamins A and D. There are several different types of cod that mainly live in cold northern seas, such as the Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and the Newfoundland coast of Canada. Several members of the cod family have barbels on their chins. The most common of these is the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).
