John Franklin Gray (1804-1882), US physician. Gray was a pioneer in homoeopathy. He studied medicine in New York, graduating in 1826 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He studied French and German and learned of the homoeopathy theories of German physician Samuel Hahnemann. He adopted homoeopathy in his own practice and by 1844 had helped found the American Institute of Homeopathy. Gray was also a prominent proponent of spiritualism. He was also a philanthropist and a leader and speaker on social issues. Photographed between 1855 and 1865.
