The High Level bridge spanning the river Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead was designed by Robert Stephenson and Harrison and completed in 1849. The bridge has two decks, providing a rail link above and a road and pedestrian way below. It is constructed from wrought and cast iron using bowstring arches supported by masonry piers. In the background is the controversial concrete multi storey car park designed in the brutalist style by architect Rodney Gordon. Completed in 1969 it was used within the film Get Carter. It has recently been demolished.
