The drill press spindlemay also be fitted up with a round steel key. It is claimedthat with this method all the old drills with broken tangsmay be used up and the good drills will not have theirtangs broken, and more important still the sockets willnot fall out of the drill press spindle. It is comparativelyeasy to replace worn out drill sockets and drills, but aworn out drill press spindle is a continual annoyanceand source of HARDENED STEEL KEY LANG DRILL SOCKET. The shells of these sockets are made from 1/16 in to% in thicker than the standard drill socket, so that theinsertion of the hardened steel key does not weakenthem. These keys are made from tempered drill rodvarying in diameter from l/% to Y% ins. These projectone-third of their diameter into the opening. These keysare all pressed in socket absolutely parallel with theangle of the bore and central with the tang slot. Theshank end of socket has a standard 90-degree V-groove(not shown in cut) milled its entire length, central withthe tang (not shown in cut). As these keys and groovesare all made standard by accurate jigs, they are all inter-changeable with each other, allowing any combinationof sockets. As shown in the illustration it is only necessary togrind a flat on the old worn out drills and the drift holein socket is made extra long so that they can be easilyknocked out.
