View NNW of the Clackmannan Stone, the Tolbooth & Mercat Cross in Main Street, Clackmannan, Scotland, UK. A sacred Iron Age whinstone boulder reputed to have come from the foot of Lookaboutye Brae near the River Forth 1km to the S where it formed part of a sacred place & rallying point for the local Iron Age tribal group the Manau, known in Roman times as the Votadini. Ritual use of such stones is well known in the Iron Age, but use of this boulder may date back to the 2nd or 3rd millennium. Clach Mannan is Gaelic for Stone of the Manau, but the boulder is sometimes known as The Stone of Mannan and said to be named after a pagan god. After being kept in Clackmannan Tower for many years, the boulder was placed on a monolith beside the Tollbooth and Mercat Cross in 1833. The belfry tower of 1680 is the surviving W end of the Tolbooth first built in 1592; it served as an office to collect tolls, as the town hall & a prison. The tower has a crowstepped roof with an ogival spire topped by a weathercock. The original parts of the Market Cross date to the C17th: the ball finial was replaced at the end of the 1800s, the steps are mainly modern.
