Mammalian modifications.—The lacteals in Dasyurusviverrinus converge to two subelongate, dark-coloured mesentericglands; one of them situated near the pylorus, at the end of thepancreas. The cysterna chyli is plexiform in the Marsupialswhich I have examined; in the Kangaroo it lies upon the cruraof the diaphragm, and extends upon the right side above the dia-phragm into the thorax. Two thoracic ducts are continued fromthe cysterna, one along the left, the other along the right side ofthe bodies of the dorsal vertebrae. The right duct crosses theseventh vertebra and joins the left, which again divides and re-unites, forming a slight plexus, before finally terminating at theconfluence of the left subclavian and jugular veins. The double. 512 ANATOMY OF VERTEBRATES. thoracic duct has been observed, with a similar arrangement, inthe Dog and Sea-otter. In most Carnivora the mesentericglands are aggregated in one mass, known to the old anatomistsas the i pancreas Asellii: in the Weasel it is in two masses, andin the Cat, Ichneumon, and Seal has been found more these, however, there is one principal gland or 4 vasoganglion, the efferent vessels of which quickly unite into a trunk groovingits dorsal surface in the Seal, from which two main canals proceedto the thorax. In Ungulata and Quadrumana the mesentericglands are numerous. 1 have noticed a large one in the meso-colon of the Echidna, near the rectum. The chyle-receptacle islarge and cavernous, sometimes bilocular, in the Horse: thethoracic duct has shown varieties like those above described inMan, but it always terminates in the precaval vein at the uniontherewith of the two jugulars.
