Coastal tundra vegetation on the island of Fugloya, Svalbard. Tundra vegetation is essentailly treeless, and is found in areas north of the taiga (pine-type forest) regions of , Europe and Asia. It is dominated by lichen and grass, as seen here, but may also contain mosses, dwarf shrubs and herbaceous perennial plants. Tundra soils are often underlain by seasonal permafrost, and have a short growing period in the polar spring and summer. Svalbard is a group of islands about 800km north of Norway. The largest island in the group is Spitsbergen.
