The struggle, however, is not yetabandoned. The Confederates haveundoubtedly gained an important ad-vantage. They have pressed the Na-tionals back from their first line ofworks. It is, in a qualified sense, a Con-federate victory. But Sickles, if dis-couraged, is not yet dismayed. He hasalready sent for reinforcements. Ifthese should anive in time, he may yetturn the tide of battle. He, therefore,boldly holds his ground. The battlerages again with tremendous fury. Theworks are repeatedly taken and Confederates, becoming more con-fident, press upon the National columnswith increasing energy. As it has be-come dangerous or impossible to makeany very effective use of the Nationalartilleiy in his front, Sickles is com-pelled to depend on the resisting power.
