The Russells of this record descend from James Russell,RUSSELL who came from Ireland, about 1750, with his brothers,William and Joshua. Joshua settled on a farm aboutfour miles north of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was the father oftwenty children, only one of whom reached adult years, all dying in in-fancy. William settled near Brownsville. James Russell owned andcultivated a farm four miles northwest of Gettysburg, and two mileswest of the estate of his brother, William. He died about 1805, leavingeight children: Sons—Samuel, Alexander, John and James; daughters— i. Samuel, one ofthe sons, lived on his own farm adjoining his fathers, later selling itand moving to Huntsville in the same county, thence to Connellsville,Fayette county, Pennsylvania, where he died leaving several sons anddaughters. John, another son, lived for many years on the homestead,then moved to an adjoining tract, where he lived until death, leavingissue. James, another son, was in mercantile business in Alexandria, , in 1808, married and left issue.
