Hypertensive emergency. Light micrograph of a section through a urinary arteriole (blood vessel) in a person affected by hypertensive emergency (formerly malignant hypertension), where the wall of the blood vessel has become hardened (sclerosed). Hypertensive emergency is high blood pressure (hypertension) that has caused acute impairment of one or more organ systems, which can result in irreversible organ failure. It is treated by gradually lowering the blood pressure using drugs.
