THE PHOCINAE In view of the scarcity of cranial remains of fossil phocines, only the phylogeny of living representatives of this group will be considered. One feature allows the separation of the subfamily into two tribes, Erigna- thini and Phocini. It is the gluteal fossa on the latteral side of the ilium that is extremely deep in the Phocini (King 1964; Hendey & Repenning 1972) but is shallow in the Erignathini and all the monachines.
