Industrial gas engine, 19th-century artwork. This was among the largest known gas engines at the time. This is the Simplex gas engine designed and built by the French engineer Edouard Delamare-Deboutteville (1856-1901) and his assistant Leon Malandin. Delamare-Deboutteville's work would culminate in a 700-horsepower engine that won the grand prize in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Artwork from the 15th volume (first period of 1895) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
