DEAN, whose portrait adorns ourcover this month, is one of the pioneer photog-raphers of the West. At the age of ten Mr. Dean hired out to Wm. Latourof Sedalia, Mo., to whose patience and forbearance isdue his success. Among his duties were cleaning glassfrom the lye pot, mixing the iron and acetic acid de-veloper and resisting the temptation to taste potassiumcyanide. In 1882 Mr. Dean went West and located in Gun-nison, Colo., then in its palmy boom days. He workedfor a local photographer until the salary due him wasequal to the value of the plant; so he bought it andhung out his sign, which has remained there ever the year 1900 he moved to Grand Junction, Colo.,where he built a small studio, afterwards erecting abuilding which does credit to his adopted city. For many years Mr. Dean has been prominent inconvention matters, and has done much hard work forthe Inter-Mountain Association. H
