( × cm), Shiokawa Bunrin was one of the leading painters of the Shijō school (Fourth Avenue school), in Kyoto, during the late Edo period and the early Meiji era. The Shijō school was an offshoot of the Maruyama school, which emphasized the importance of making sketches and preparatory drawings directly from nature. Both schools may be considered precursors to Japanese-style painting (Nihonga)
