Optic disc drusen. Ophthalmoscope view of the retina of a patient's eye, showing optic disc drusen. At centre is the yellow optic disc where blood vessels and the optic nerve enter the retina. The retina appears orange around it. Drusen is a condition in which small white hyaline growths form on the head of the optic nerve. Here they are seen around the optic disc, and in the uneven shape of the disc. Although the optic disc plays no role in vision, nerve damage in drusen may cause impairment to peripheral vision. It may also result in retinal detachment. Drusen is a hereditary condition.
