Lorenzo de'Ferrari. Olympus. 1743–1744. France. Brush and brown ink and brown wash, heightened with white gouache, over graphite, on tan laid paper Pierre Mignard lived in Rome from 1636 to 1657. This rare early drawing, executed upon his return to Paris, reflects his Italian training and echoes the anatomies and foreshortening of the Carraccis’ ceiling designs. This study for a ceiling in the Hotel d’Hervaert, which was demolished in 1881, is the only remaining trace of Mignard’s first major commission.
