Indians, who missed him, in fine style, disaj)- pearcd in the woods, and darkness coming on, was lost. This event did not concern me greatly, as he was not a big stag; hut I was sorry to have wounded the poor creature, and to have lost him stupidly after all. The next day Baird killed a fine big stag with a good head; and as it was his first one, he was very much pleased, and related the details of the stalk with great excitement. I travelled over a good deal of ground, but saw nothing except a hind and a lovely white fawn. The pretty creatures fed close to me whilst sitting under the lee of a rock having some luncheon; and I watched them with much in- terest as they gambolled about, quite uncon- scious of danger, within forty yards of me. Reuben suo-gested that the fawn's skin would make a good rug; and so it would have, and a very handsome one, but nothing would induce me to molest them. The Baronet remained in camp, but saw nothing. It now became evi- dent to us that our camp, though favourably chosen for passing deer, and selected by the Indians with that view, was badly placed for.
