The peculiarities of the face in these cases, together with mouthbreathing and the abnormally large tongue which protrudes from theopen mouth, often make one suspect cretinism; but the skin is softand velvety in the early stages, and the hair neither dry nor brittle. Adenoids are sometimes thought of as a cause of the mouth breath-ing; but this is due to narrowing of the nasopharyngeal vault pro-duced by anteroposterior narrowing of the skull and prominence ofthe upper cervical vertebrae, all of which can readily be appreciatedby making an examination for adenoids.
